by Bart Icles The Black Decker company was founded by S. Duncan Black and Alonzo G. Decker in Baltimore, Maryland in 1910. Like all great and successful companies of the tool manufacturing industry of today, their business started in a small machine shop with the name The Black Decker Manufacturing Company. In 1917 they invented the portable electric drill, and obtained a patent for a hand-held drill with a pistol grip and trigger switch on it. And as they say, the rest is history
